Chad Cowan @stormtimelapse captured the strong winds in Naples, Fla., from a parking garage today as Hurricane Irma made its landfall on the mainland U.S. A 142 mph wind gust was recorded at the Naples airport one mile east. Cowan estimates this was around the same magnitude.⠀

It was the highest wind gust he has experienced in his 10 years of storm chasing. "Hurricane Andrew was a big reason I had got interested in the weather as a kid and I've always wanted to experience a major hurricane in south Florida. Thankfully they had not had any major landfalls in over a decade so this was the first real chance I got and it didn't disappoint. I hate to see the destruction these storms cause, but there is nothing that I can do or say that will change any outcome with the weather. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this monster storm."⠀
