In 2012, TIME worked with journalist and activist Jose Antonio Vargas to share the story of America’s Dreamers—undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. The day the story was published, President Obama enacted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) which has shielded some 800,000 immigrants from deportation. In the early days of his presidency, Donald Trump pledged to “show great heart” to the young immigrants who had entered the country illegally as children, usually brought by their parents. On Sept. 5, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that Obama’s executive action was being rescinded, leaving many young immigrants to question their future in a country that they consider to be home. TIME reached back out to those Dreamers we interviewed and photographed five years ago to find out where their lives are now and how this new announcement from the administration could change their future.
