Student and designer @shabakaaa has been to @Afropunk twice before, but this year she decided to wear something with much more personal resonance than she has in the past. She designed her Southern belle-inspired pale yellow dress herself, and paired it with an ornate fan and golden beads that adorned her hair. And while the Los Angeles native acknowledges that Afropunk is as much a fashion show as it is a "cultural extravaganza," she feels as if this year’s festival has taken on a more profound meaning given the current political climate. "I feel as if [Afropunk this year] means cultural retention and cultural resistance and being able to stay true to yourself through all of this," she said.
