It is said that 30,000 people converge on Ghana’s capital, Accra, for Chale Wote, a yearly celebration of the arts in the heart of the city’s historic Jamestown district. Chale Wote, which loosely translated means “Man, let’s go!” in Ga, a language spoken in the southeastern region of the country, was started in 2011 as a way to bring the country's rich culture forward. Vendors sling kebabs and Star beer, the local brew; the street and stage are filled with performers both modern (Skate Nation, Ghana’s only skate crew, lit up the block by hitting handmade jumps) and old school (young boys covered in white paint danced to whatever was blasting from the speakers); and locals graffiti the walls in vibrant colors.
