The Face, a ground-breaking magazine that shook up the print world when the print world was the only option, first published in May 1980. In the first decade it was, together with i.D. one of the two go to references for contemporary British sub culture. In those early years the founder Nick Logan aided by art director Neville Brody steered the magazine to deliver a fresh view on fashion, music and culture and for the first time recognising the interdependence of those streams. Into the 1990’s, and no doubt enlivened by the arrival of magazines such as Dazed and Confused, the magazine embraced changes in style and brought in a new team that embraced developments across the creative spectrum and with a special emphasis on showcasing new photography. The Face ran off its last print in 2004 after 24 years of solid duty. This issue 16 from August 1981 and the contents is a staggering example of the coincidence of sub cultures at one time in the UK. In this issue you find Echo And The Bunnymen, Spandau Ballet, The Clash, Iggy Pop, Blondie, an article on Coventry (aka The Specials hometown, aka Ghostown), The Clash, Teardrop Explodes, an article on Blitz Kids becoming designers, Julie Burchill writes on the young generation, John Lydon in the US with PiL, photography from Janette Beckman, Tom Sheehan, Sheila Rock and Jill Furmanovsky, an article by Paul Morley, another by Jon Savage and there is film news of Derek Jarman, John Maybury and John Waters. It is pure undiluted sub culture overload, although the letters page is a clear indication that the readers might not have been so appreciative of what was occurring at the time. There are seven letters, #1- 6 are an all-out assault on the magazine and the articles in previous issues. #7 is short to the point “To everyone. Why don’t you shut up and leave us Mods alone? Shaz-The Modette “. We with you Shaz. The issue is around the time we opened the first Underground store and of course, a copy sits in the studio amongst a pile of Magazines that never gather dust. The favourite? Probablly a tie between issue 16 and issue 39. Issue 39 has already featured on a blog and go find out why we like it.
