Mention “rock vomit” and an invasive underwater creature probably isn’t the first thing to come to mind.
Rock vomit (Didemnum vexillum or “D. vex” to biologists) is a colonial tunicate: a mat-like #ocean creature that covers everything it touches—docks, nets and sometimes square miles of fishing habitat.
Biologists from @smithsonianenvironment found it in #Alaska in 2010. Today, they’re exploring ways to eradicate it to protect Alaska’s native #marine life, with support from @NPRBScience.
Stay tuned for more @smithsonianenvironment field photos all week, as we take over the @スミソニアン博物館 Instagram account!
