It's NAIDOC Week – a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and society.⠀

Kukatja/Wangkajunga man Rover 'Joolama' Thomas painted this interpretation of a new Australian flag for a 1966 exhibition in Sydney.⠀

The work represents the land Thomas comes from with his community at the centre. It can also be interpreted as a representation of the Southern Cross, the star cluster found on the current Australian flag. Thomas did not begin painting until the age of 60 but quickly gained an international reputation for his work.⠀

Currently on display at #PowerhouseMuseum along with other works by Indigenous artists to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum. #NAIDOC2017 #ABHM
