This contraption combines the Hills hoist rotary clothesline, one of the most celebrated Australian inventions and a symbol of the nation’s suburban identity, with the less known figure of Maria Ann Smith, a Sydney fruitgrower credited with the world’s first cultivation of the Granny Smith apple in 1868. ??? It was designed by David Waller for the 'Journey of a Nation' parade as part of the 2001 Centenary of Federation celebrations in Sydney. Propelled by pedal power, when the cycle moved forward the overhead clothesline rotated.⠀
