Utamaro idealized some of Japan's notorious districts (and their brothels) in his immense paintings. “Inventing Utamaro: A Japanese Masterpiece Rediscovered” explores the carefully constructed persona of Utamaro, the many questions surrounding his work and the dark reality behind his colorfully portrayed subject matter.
