These are the remains of revered naturalist Robert Kennicott (1835-1866), who began sending specimens to the Smithsonian at age 17.
Kennicott’s first major collecting expedition in 1858 took him through what’s now Canada and Alaska. He was still collecting for the Smithsonian when he died unexpectedly at age 30, while mapping an Arctic telegraph route for Western Union.
@Smithsoniannmnh forensic anthropologists studied Kennicott’s remains, letters about his health, and the expedition accounts to unravel the cause of death. Though Kennicott’s bones, hair, and tissues contained traces of arsenic, mercury, and strychnine—substances often used by 19th century naturalists to collect and preserve specimens—the investigators determined Kennicott died of heart disease.
Kennicott’s remains, which are on view in #ObjectsofWonder, were donated to @smithsoniannmnh by the Kennicott Family and The Grove National Historic Landmark.
