Welcome to the frozen shore of Ross Island, a rare spot of ice-free ground in #Antarctica. This year, the sea ice stretches 40 miles north — a 3-day walk for a hungry penguin. It’s nesting season. Many of these Adélie penguins have been huddling over their eggs for a month without food or water. Their chicks will hatch next week. Not far from here is Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on the planet. 12,000-feet-high, it straddles 3 worlds: the thin sea ice that is home to these #penguins, the volcanic rock they need for their nests and the thick floating ice of the Ross Ice Shelf. In our latest #NYTVR film, join scientists in a military cargo plane as they probe the structure of the Ross shelf, a Texas-size chunk of floating ice. What they discover will help predict Antarctica’s fate. Visit the link in our profile to watch it now. #?
