A few weeks ago, @andylocal2’s wife saw a baby #pigeon on the escalator at a subway station in Brooklyn. It was about to get mangled at the top step, so she brought it home. They took it to @wildbirdfund, a rehab center in Manhattan. (If you find an orphaned or injured bird in NYC, you can bring it there.) Every spring, @wildbirdfundnyc gets hundreds of birds, including chickens. They’ll take a bird off your hands, or train you to foster it, along with a “buddy bird.” @andylocal2, a @nytimes reporter, said OK. Willet, his #pigeon — photographed here by @alexwroblewskiphoto — was 2 or 3 weeks old and a “red.” Willet’s buddy bird, Sunflower, was a week older and wore the traditional uniform of a New York City pigeon. “Raising the birds made me feel more connected to the city,” @andylocal2 writes. “I’d see pigeons in the street and think, Hey, I know those guys!” But the family wasn’t supposed to bond with the birds; that would make it harder for them to survive in the wild. @andylocal2 and his family took turns feeding the pigeons. When they put them in the bathroom to practice flying, the birds just hid under the sink. Gradually, though, Willet and Sunflower began to fly. One night when @andylocal2 opened the bathroom door, they were on top of the sink. It was time. So on Wednesday, Willet joined the world of pigeons in @centralparknyc. Sunflower will be released soon. Watch our Instagram Story to see more. #?
