There was a time not long ago when the David and Gladys Wright House — designed by #FrankLloydWright for his son — was slated to meet an ungraceful end. Developers wanted to knock down the building, 2,500 square feet of coiled concrete built in 1952 in an exclusive Phoenix neighborhood called Arcadia. But then Zach Rawling, 35, a millionaire builder who lives nearby, stepped in to save it. The house’s spiral design is meant to capture the wind that blows from any direction and to invite the desert in. Fittingly, Zach’s hope was to turn the property into an educational and events center. “I wanted people to be inspired and hopefully bring some of Wright’s creativity into their lives,” he said. Yesterday, on the 150th anniversary of Wright’s birth, Zach donated the house to @schooltaliesin, which Wright established in 1932. It’s by far the largest gift the #architecture school has received, and it will function as an extension of a small experimental program that aims to increase enrollment. One goal: to make the school financially sustainable. And there’s more: “Family and fellowship are the living parts of Wright’s legacy,” Zach said. “I hope that this continues to be a place where everyone is welcome.” @caitlin_oh took this photo of the David and Gladys Wright House in #Phoenix, Arizona.
