Myojin Pond wells up from water that builds up in the soil at the base of Mount Myojin. Located on Nagano’s scenic Kamikochi plateau, the view of the early-morning mist is particularly stunning.
This photo was taken from the grounds of Oku-Hotaka Shrine. In the Hotaka Shrine Boat Festival on October 8 each year, Shinto priests in Heian-period dress step aboard brightly colored boats to ease the spirits of those who died climbing the Japan Alps.
