On this day (16 April) in 1965, the full power of the Saturn V was felt for the first time in a test stand firing of the cluster of five F-1 first stage engines at NASA’s Marshall Spaceflight Center in Alabama. The engines burned for 6.5 seconds and produced 7.5 million pounds-force of thrust. This test firing created the loudest noise ever heard in the state. The origins of the Saturn V began with the US government harvesting German rocket expertise in the aftermath of WWII. Called Operation Paperclip, the programme was designed to give the US an edge in the Cold War through the development of intermediate-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Soviet Union also took on board a number of German rocket scientists. The Saturn V was later used to launch America's first Space Station, Skylab...
