Lava flows from previous eruptions is visible at the northern side of Mount Nyiragongo, an active stratovolcano in Virunga National Park, about 20 km (12 mi) north of the city of Goma and Lake Kivu. Since 1882, it has erupted at least 34 times. Whereas most lava flows move rather slowly, Nyiragongo's lava, due to low silica content, may reach speeds of up to 100 km/h (60 mph). In 2002, lava flowed into Goma and 400,000 people were evacuated across the Rwandan border. On March 8, 2016, Goma Volcano Observatory discovered a new vent that opened in the northeast edge of the crater, not far from these aged lava flows, following local reports of rumblings coming from the volcano.
