This beautiful watercolour of a tiger lily is by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), a leading naturalist and scientific illustrator specialising in painting plants, animals, and insects. She produced many of these botanically accurate works on vellum, a material used for writing and drawing that is made from calf’s skin. She painted this piece in the 1690s, before she travelled to Suriname in South America in 1699 to document and illustrate new species of insects. #MariaSibyllaMerian #BritishMuseum #tigerlily #botanical
