Today is International Women’s Day, a day to wear your #Pussyhat loudly and proudly, amongst many other things. MAAS if the first institution in Australia to acquire a pink Pussyhat for their collection and this particular Pussyhat was handmade for the Museum's collection by leading Australian feminist, writer and social commentator, Dr @annesummers (pictured here with MAAS Director Dolla Merrillees).⠀

On January 21, 2017, the day after Donald Trump's inauguration, more than 1 million supporters of women's rights descended on the National Mall in Washington DC wearing pink Pussyhats (a knitted, crocheted or sewn hat with cat's ears). This was the debut of the Pussyhat, providing a chance for people from all around the world to visibly identify themselves with the march and show their solidarity for the rights of all women. ⠀

The Pussyhat, which directly references the female genitalia and Trump's infamous "pussy grabbing" slurs, seeks to reclaim this loaded term as a means of empowerment through the collective concept of hand making pussycat-shaped hats to help bring participants together from all over the world and, ultimately, lay the groundwork for future political activism.⠀
