After one year of waiting at Kara Tepe refugee center in Lesbos, two Afghan refugee sisters welcomed us into their temporary home and shared their story. They described a treacherous journey through the mountains of Iran to turkey, with snow up to their necks and freezing cold. They finally made it to the shores of Lesbos, after once again risking their lives on a flimsy rubber boat. I asked them if they cried or if they were afraid on their journey- they said no. Today, the little one, Hanife, already speaks 4 languages at 9 years old and says she wants to teach English. Her older sister, Attife, 11 years old, wants to be a pediatrician.
