Making studio visits is an essential part of curatorial work. I visited Sun Xun’s studio in Beijing at different stages of the commissioning process. On this visit, Sun showed me his progress in making the animation component of the multi-media work “Mythological Time.” These large paintings he laid out on the floor compose the background of the animated work. Some of them feature landscapes of Sun’s hometown Fuxin where he did sketches on site, and some of them are imaginary scenarios.
