When I visited Chia-En Jao (@chiaen_jao) in Taipei, he took me to the famous Yongle Fabric Market. This is where he acquired materials for his installation work “Arms no. 31.” He selected the fabrics based on the historical and cultural significance of how these fabrics are traditionally used. Professional designers continue to buy fabric and sewing supplies from here although the importance of the market has declined. The market is located on the second floor of a somewhat rundown concrete structure tacked onto a colonial-era facade.
