Gilbert Stuart painted this life-size portrait of George Washington in 1796, the last year of his two-term presidency.
The artwork is now known as the “Lansdowne” portrait, because an American senator paid Stuart to paint the portrait as a gift for English statesman William Petty, first Marquis of Lansdowne.
It was so popular that many people requested their own commissioned versions. One of those was put on display in the White House—and later rescued by Dolley Madison during the War of 1812, when the British army burned the White House and other Washington buildings.

The portrait is in our @smithsoniannpg's collection, but currently off view for conservation. #PresidentsDay
