The panda habitat runs on bamboo. The giant pandas are not the only animals in the Zoo that eat bamboo, but they do eat the most of it.
During the winter, each of the adults are offered up to 100 pounds per day. Our Department of Nutrition Science grows bamboo at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, and they work with local landowners in the area to provide the pandas with fresh bamboo all year long. Our nutrition department usually delivers bamboo several times a week, or will even make daily deliveries to keep up with the pandas. The pandas have between four and five feedings every day.
Even though bamboo makes up 99 percent of their diet, they have the gastrointestinal tract of carnivores, which is why they do not digest bamboo very well. But in the wild, bamboo is the most plentiful resource in giant panda habitat and they evolved to take advantage of it. #PandaStory #ByeByeBaoBao
