While we’re taking care of the pandas, we can also help our scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute study them. We regularly collect urine samples from #MeiXiang. She will likely come into estrus (when a female is in estrus, she is ready to breed) this year after #BeiBei separates from her. We collect the samples and send them to our endocrinology lab.
By tracking progesterone levels, our scientists can pinpoint exactly when Mei Xiang ovulates, which is important information to know since female pandas are only capable of conceiving a cub for 24 to 72 hours of the year.
