Read for more information on CARBOHYDRATES ? ? ? Did you know carbohydrates aren't inherently evil? What a concept! 1. Carbohydrates (CHO) are macromolecules comprised of sugar molecule(s). They are one of three macronutrients, alongside Protein (PRO) and fat (FAT) 2. CHO are a major source of our energy, meaning our body's prefer to metabolize CHO for energy over FAT. CHO provide us with 4 kcal (calories) per gram 3. Carbohydrates are required for muscle glycogen. Exhaustion caused by exercise is related to depleted muscle glycogen. 4. Strenuous activity incites a greater proportion of CHO used for energy relative to FAT. This simply means that high intensity activities depend primarily on CHO for fuel. (FAT on the other hand is oxidized during low activity levels). This is seen through muscle contractions (i.e. lifting weights) where fat can't be oxidized rapidly enough compared to CHO. 4. What if you don't eat enough CHO? Gluconeogenesis is the process of glucose being formed from non-CHO molecules, like PRO and FAT. That means your PRO isn't utilized for muscle synthesis, but rather for energy. To avoid this, consume adequate amounts of CHO to provide the body with fuel so that glucogenic amino acid is not converted. 5. You will tend to hear about carbohydrate depletion when talking about dieting. This is mainly in part for the reason that CHO isn't considered a essential macromolecule, 6. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that our bodies don't utilize it efficiently. Alongside purposes for fuelling our bodies, essential micronutrients can be sourced naturally from CHO. For example, 1 large potato will source you with 21% of your recommended intake of niacin, 46% vitamin b6, and 21% folate, all of which are essential to consume (essential means our bodies cannot make sufficient amount endogenously, therefore it needs to be supplemented or consumed in the diet) If I step away from scientific literature for a moment, I can personally attest that carbs are not inherently evil. There is nothing wrong with giving your body it's preferable energy. Also, it's important that you enjoy your meals. (More in comments ??)
