Wordplay often accompanies auspicious #LunarNewYear messages because of the abundance of the homophones in the Chinese language. Saturday, Jan. 28, marks the start of the Year of the Rooster. The Chinese character for rooster or chicken 雞 is pronounced “ji,” which sounds like good luck 吉. Our greeting message, “ji hui,” means “chicken gathering,” and sounds exactly the same as “opportunity” in Mandarin Chinese: 大小雞會 新春報喜 (big and small chickens gathering together, announcing happy news for the New Year). Happy Year of the Rooster. "Cockeral (One of a Pair)," 18th century, China
