What can you learn from the back of a painting? In the case of this #Courbet, labels and notes found on the back helped our staff unravel the painting’s Nazi-era history. It was seized by the Nazis from the collection of Paris art dealer Paul Rosenberg in 1941 and selected by Hermann Göring for his personal collection. The Allies recovered it from Göring’s house at Berchtesgaden in 1945, and it was repatriated to France and restituted to Rosenberg in 1946.
