“I’ll give you the technology, you give me the imagination.” In 1989, Yamaha sponsored a competition for inventive speakers to replace the conventional black-box designs. Satoru Hibino’s design—one of over 950 entries—was awarded one of the twenty-two prizes. The system has three speakers: one for high tones, one for medium tones, and the largest for low tones. By conjuring the image of a futuristic flower arrangement, the witty and playful design of the “Ikebana” system exemplifies the emergence of new, humanized, and representational forms for electronic products that conceal their high tech functions.
