In much the same way that Rauschenberg would entertain the element of chance in his work (his combines incorporated discarded items that he happened to find on the street), choreographer Trisha Brown was interested in the tension between choreography (the set) and improvisation (the reset). "Set and Reset" is based on a fixed number of phrases and/or a fixed trajectory around the stage, but within that structure the dancers on whom she made the work were not only encouraged but required to improvise around the phrases that Brown set. These improvisations were developed and in their own turn became 'set'. The piece is therefore wholly choreographed as danced, but the final product seen on stage is arrived at by a process of collaboration and improvisation. Accordingly, each company which dances the piece dances it in a slightly different, albeit wholly recognisable way.
