This 1779 medal depicts a Revolutionary War battle between the Serapis and the USS Bonhomme Richard, which was under the command of Captain John Paul Jones. Dripping with incredible detail, you can see men struggling in the water beside the ships.
This is one of the 11 "Comitia Americana" medals (Latin for "American Congress"). The medals were created after a vote by the Continental Congress in March 1776. The practice of giving medals was a common action of independent European countries. By joining in this tradition, the 13 colonies were declaring their status as an independent and worthy nation.
Who did the medals honor in addition to John Paul Jones? George Washington, John Eager Howard, William Washington, Anthony Wayne, John Stewart, Daniel Morgan, Horatio Gates, François-Louis Teissèdre de Fleury, Henry Lee, and Nathanael Greene.
