We're bundling up today and holding our furry friends close. Despite the snowflakes, we're open today from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.
This is a photo produced by Underwood & Underwood. The company was founded in Ottawa, Kansas, in 1881 by brothers Elmer and Bert Elias Underwood. We don't know who the woman (or the cat) in this photo is, but we love her hat. Have you seen one like it?
The process used to produce this image was the gelatin dry plate process, which involved light-sensitive silver particles coated on glass plates. This meant the plates were ready to go—right out of the box—and the photographer didn't need to carry an entire chemical lab to coat, sensitize, expose, and then develop plates on the scene. The plates could wait until the photographer returned to a darkroom to develop them. This photo is from around the 1920s.
