This handaxe is around a million years old. The ironstone has been shaped to make the handaxe symmetrical and thin, a process requiring time and skill. It is too thin to be practical for everyday use, suggesting that people were making objects to be aesthetically pleasing.

Human brains are attracted to symmetry, and perhaps the maker of the handaxe was tapping into this preference, to create a tool that would attract attention. It would also communicate skill, good eyesight and an ability to source material and plan ahead.

See some of the earliest examples of human creativity in our special exhibition #SouthAfricanArt. Follow the link in our bio to book your tickets.

Kathu Pan handaxe. Maker’s name unrecorded, about a million years ago. On loan from McGregor Museum, Kimberley.
