Photo and caption by @petekmuller. It’s been lovely, London. A quiet and serene reprieve amid the haste of it all. Autumn days, crisp and fortuitously clear, spent walking and looking and thinking. For the first time, I visited the city’s very fine art museums, which exceed even the most lofty of expectations. As I explored their quiet halls, I reflected on the visual traditions to which I hope to make a modest contribution. I purchased a book about the life of #Caravaggio, a revered and conflicted painter whose work I greatly admire and whose exhibition motivated my trip. In the early chapters, I read about Carlo Borromeo, the zealous Archbishop of Milan during the years when a young Caravaggio called that city home. Borromeo, believed in the power of art to encourage people to visualize and meditate upon the sufferings of Christ. At a time when media were limited, Caravaggio’s dire realism garnered interest as a means of facilitating this type of vivid imagination and meditation. These passages left me considering the enduring role of art, and of photography in particular, to engage imagination. I reflected on the importance of creating work that responsibly engages the imagination of those who may never witness, first hand, what a photographer captures. I thought about the parameters of art and visual storytelling and the seemingly eternal connection and struggle between the two concepts. I wish I had more time but other things await. Emails have accrued. The drumbeat beckons. I am grateful for these lovely few days and the opportunity to reflect on all that’s gone before and what might lie ahead. Onward. #London #England #beyondcaravaggio #art #UK #photography #reflection #photos #paintings
