Photograph by @paleyphoto (Matthieu Paley). Refugees leftovers: the package of a child's inflatable vest, a boat pump, bread and the New Testament. Since 5 years, I live in Turkey, not far from a Greek island called Chios. Greece is Europe, and thousands of #refugees from Syria and Afghanistan mainly, have hidden in the beaches to try and make it, often at dawn or dusk, to the island nearby. They wait, sometimes for days for the right conditions (no wind) and often leave in a hurry, when the smugglers tells them that the time is now. They pile up on inflatable boats and almost always have to leave things behind, here on the Turkey shore. The rule is that no one can have more than a small bag on board. Then the page turns, a scary crossing on the ocean (a lot of the refugees do not know how to swim) and ahead, the hope of #Europe and beyond. When the refugees are gone, these leftovers remain, testimonies laying about. This week-end, I went camping on the beach; some surfing and camp fire to try and forget the hectic life. And like last year when I first met refugees here, I photographed what they left behind; like visiting an abandoned house, our two worlds side by side. There are currently over 8000 refugees stranded in Chios island, waiting in camps for a verdict on their asylum claims. See this month’s @natgeo magazine on the New Europeans (photos by @hammond_robin) to meet some of those who made it to Europe and are reshaping that continent. #refugeecrisis @natgeocreative
