Photo by @daviddoubilet A group of silky sharks patrol just beneath the surface at twilight in Cuba's Gardens of the Queen National Park . This marine preserve located 50 miles off the southern coast of Cuba is a window back in time to a Caribbean Sea that existed decades ago before overfishing and development emptied the reefs. Jardines de la Reina reefs are teeming with fish that support healthy populations of sharks in a balanced ecosystem. Silky sharks are doing well in this preserve but they have declined 70% on global scale due to shark finning. Just days ago the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) listed silky sharks in CITIES Appendix II requiring countries to ensure the commercial trade of this species will finally be regulated.
