Our porch, as an architectural element, has roots in African and African Diaspora communities.
Designed as an extension of the building into the landscape, the museum’s covered porch creates a distinct space between the interior and exterior of the building. Drawing inspiration from the original function of porches on domestic structures as an area to greet neighbors, receive visitors, and converse with loved ones, the museum’s porch will offer a shaded area where visitors are welcomed to convene. It also stands as a gateway between the National Mall, America’s front yard, and our museum.
In other words, the @NMAAHC building is African American history and culture on the National Mall. Its location and design represent the past, present, and future of the African American experience in ways that are both tangible and symbolic. This has been @NMAAHC taking over the Smithsonian feed.
