Our museum is shaped in a three-tiered structure known as a crown or corona.
The corona is angled upward to express joy and is covered in 3,600 panels of bronze cast aluminum known as a filigree. The angle of the panels is the same 17.5-degree angle as the Washington Monument’s capstone. The filigree’s intricate latticework is reminiscent of the New Orleans ironwork made by enslaved African American craftsmen in the nineteenth century.
