Carlotta Walls wore this outfit on her first day of school in 1957. But she wasn’t just walking into her sophomore year. Walls (whose last name is now LaNier) was a member of the Little Rock Nine, integrating Little Rock Central High School.
She hadn't intended to do anything heroic when she signed up—all she wanted, she said, was a top-quality education. She and her mother went shopping for a special look for a special day and found "the perfect outfit," this alphabet-patterned skirt and blouse.
When segregationists attempted to bar LaNier and her classmates from integrating the school, President Dwight Eisenhower called on the U.S. Army and federalized the Arkansas National Guard to protect them and ensure their attendance. LaNier persevered to be the first African American girl to graduate from the school in 1960.
Now you can see her outfit in our @nmaahc, whose objects we’re showcasing before our newest museum opens on Saturday. #APeoplesJourney
