photograph by @susanseubert // Tomorrow I head to the island of Maui where I will most likely encounter these critters, the Pacific Green Sea Turtle. These turtles are among the world's largest, with recorded weights up to 700lbs. The way to identify the sex of the animal is by the length of its tail. Pictured here is a male, as indicated by the tail extending beyond its rear flippers. This species of turtle is considered endangered and is protected in the United States by the Endangered Species Act. Although the populations in and around the Hawaiian Islands seem to be thriving, in other areas of the world they are still hunted for their shells and eggs.
