Every year, millions of tourists pour into #Venice’s streets and canals. Their numbers are profoundly altering the city and threatening its very existence, writes Salvatore Settis for #NYTOpinion. Last month, @unesco decided to place #Venice and its lagoon on its #WorldHeritage in Danger list unless substantial progress to halt the degradation of the city and its ecosystem is made by next February. 55 sites around the world are listed as endangered by @unesco, for reasons as varied as terrorism, tourism or want of repairs.
