Diehard fans waited for the rain to subside at the @westsidetennisclub on September 2, 1969. The downpour interrupted a 4-hour-10-minute match between the 15th-seeded Marty Riessen of Evanston, Illinois, and the second-seeded John Newcombe of Australia. In the first 3 sets of the Newcombe-Riessen battle, there had been little hint that the pair would break the record for most games played at the @westsidetennisclub in a single set. But both players became amazingly steady in the 4th set, when they played 26 games without a service break. The contest consisted of 3 elements — the weather, courage under pressure and outright drama — but Newcombe ultimately outlasted Riessen 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 25-23, and moved into the quarterfinal round. This photo, taken by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Michael Evans, comes from the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ archives. We’ll be sharing more #? photos this #nytweekender.
