If it rains next week during the @usopen, there will be no lengthy delay or complete washout at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens. This year, the tournament will unveil a $150 million retractable roof on the 23,771-seat stadium. For years, such a project was deemed not economically, architecturally or technologically feasible. But finally, Rossetti — the architecture firm that designed the tennis stadium, the largest in the world — had a breakthrough: They would build a superstructure around and above the existing building. At the public unveiling earlier this month, it took about 5 minutes 21 seconds to cover the 62,500-square-foot opening with a set of 38,000-square-foot fabric panels. Officials, players and fans will have to wait and see, though, what the protocols will be for a roof-closing, or what a raucous night crowd might sound like in an enclosed stadium. @george_etheredge took this photo while on #nytassignment in Queens. #?
