The platforms floated out above the crowd slowly, like an Imperial Star Destroyer soaring through space in “Star Wars.” Tethered to the center of one of them for most of the night was Kanye West, opening his #SaintPabloTour at @bankerslifefieldhouse in Indianapolis. If you were on the floor below him, you could choose how to experience the show — in thrall to Kanye in the sky, dancing in the light beneath him, or soaking it all in from the fringes. It was a minimalist, elaborately efficient way to deliver an arena show: It got him closer to both ends of the room, and also to both the fans on the floor and those in the cheap seats way up top. His concert was the latest innovation in a year full of them; @ドレイク, @ビヨンセ and @リアーナ have all tried on their tours to shrink oversize spaces — a reconsideration of the top-down power dynamic in the age of social-media intimacy and immediacy. @ajmast captured #KanyeWest while on #nytassignment in #Indianapolis. Follow the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ music critic @joncaramanica to see more from the show.
