photo by @Joel Sartore | One of the most endangered songbirds in North America, the Kirtland’s Warbler (adult male pictured here) was down to just 167 singing males in 1987. Although still federally #endangered, the species is on the road to recovery. These birds only nest in young jack pine trees, a large number of which have been planted by @michigandnr, @u.s.forestservice, and @usfws. Today there are more than 2300 singing males! Though the species' long-term recovery is threatened by habitat loss and climate change on their Bahamian wintering grounds, @Nature_Is_Grand and colleagues at @スミソニアン国立動物園 are now using light-weight tracking devices to unlock the birds' year-round migration patterns.
