Grass and plants have invaded the lobby of a 14-story hotel, which never opened, in Boten, Laos. About a half-dozen years ago, Boten was a casino boomtown, a pinprick of neon amid thickly forested hills, which drew in thousands of visitors a month from across the border in China’s Yunnan Province. But just as gambling powered Boten’s rise, it also brought about Boten’s fall. Even though Boten is in Laos, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered casinos closed after reports emerged of concessionaires locking up visitors who were unable to pay off gambling debts. Today, the remote town lives in the shadow of more prosperous times, but it’s luck may change. According to Laotian state media, Chinese investors have poured more than $1.5 billion into a new development called the Beautiful Boten Specific Economic Zone. The new development aims to resurrect many of the original plans for the town, with one major tweak: no gambling. @gillessabrie took this photo while on #nytassignment in #Laos.
