Yesterday, the U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a searing video of the encounter reignited issues surrounding police killings of African-Americans. In the video, 2 white officers can be seen arresting the 37-year-old CD vendor and pinning him to the ground, when at least one of the officers shoots him. The shooting of #AltonSterling immediately ignited protests in the community. Cars and trucks honked, stopped and skidded as they made their way up and down a few blocks of North Foster Drive, past cheering and dancing crowds. The street rally, which flowed into the morning, included a vigil with prayers and gospel music, and was as peaceful as it was passionate. Meanwhile, across the country, #PhilandoCastile was fatally shot last night by police during a traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb — the second shooting this week of a black man by police officers. Parts of both encounters were recorded on video. @misterwidmer photographed last night’s rally in #BatonRouge while on #nytassignment.
