Dan Klein, left, kissed his girlfriend after getting tattooed in Brooklyn in February. Dan used to be the singer of the Caribbean-inflected New York band @thefrightnrs. Shortly after the band started recording its first album for @daptonerecords, Dan was diagnosed with ALS. “I’m trying to get my entire life story tattooed on my body before I lose all my muscle mass,” Dan told one of his bandmates. He continued to get inked through late April, when he started to use a breathing machine and had trouble leaving the house. Each tattoo helped boost Dan’s spirit, arguing for permanence on a body in transition. On June 8, a weakened Dan begged his family to help him attend a show by @sharonjones and @the_dapkings in @prospect_park. Later that morning, Dan died in his sleep. Rich Terrana, the Frightnrs' drummer, said that Dan drew on his dark wit for strength to the end. “He said: ‘Please use my death to your advantage. I’m not going out without a bang,’ ” Rich recalled. @cgregoryphoto took this photo while on #nytassignment.
