This photograph by @eduklondon features a striking detail from the Assyrian lion hunt reliefs on display in Room 10. These sculpted reliefs were created for a palace in Nineveh for the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal (r. 668–627 BC). In ancient Assyria, lion hunting was considered the sport of kings, symbolic of the ruling monarch’s duty to protect and fight for his people. In the mid-7th century BC, after a series of good years with ample rain, lions were particularly common. The records of Ashurbanipal claim that ‘the hills resound with their roaring, the wild animals tremble. They pull down the cattle, spill human blood as well’. It was the king’s duty to protect his people from enemies of every kind. The lion hunt scenes from Ashurbanipal’s palace show events that took place in an arena, ringed by soldiers and huntsmen. In this scene, the king has grabbed a spear from one of his attendants, and drives it into a wounded lion that is biting the wheel of his chariot. The hunt scenes, full of tension and realism, rank among the finest achievements of Assyrian art.

This week we’re featuring fascinating details of objects captured by our visitors. Share your photos of the Museum with us using #mybritishmuseum and tagging @大英博物館. #regram #repost #Assyrian
