This week we are highlighting some of the important sacred statues on display in the Museum.
This statue, known as a ‘moai’, comes from the island of Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Rapa Nui is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. Polynesians first settled on it before AD 800.
Around 1,000 moai were carved, probably to commemorate important former chiefs who were revered as divine. The islanders' name for the statue is Hoa Hakananai'a, which is thought to mean 'hidden friend'. See this statue in Room 24 (the Wellcome Trust Gallery of Living and Dying). The displays in this room explore our shared challenges as human beings, and investigate people's reliance on relationships – with each other, the animal kingdom, spiritual powers and the world around us.
