So one night a couple of weeks ago, Seth, the kids, and myself were making chocolate chip cookies together. Seth turned to me just as we were sliding the cookies into the oven and asked “When and where were chocolate chip cookies invented?” We took some interesting guesses before doing a google search, and learned that we can thank Ruth Wakefield. In 1930, Ruth and her husband took their life savings to open up a Cape Cod-style tollhouse (a place where guests could eat a meal and rest while their stagecoaches were changing horses and road tolls were being paid). Their restaurant became well known for their delicious meals and even more so for Ruth’s scrumptious desserts. Now there is great debate to why and how the chocolate chip cookie was invented: some say it was by accident when Ruth ran out of nut pieces and used small chunks of Nestle chocolate from a chocolate bar she had on hand; while others say this former dietitian knew exactly what she was doing and created a hand held affordable sweet treat that stood as comfort food and an antidote to the great depression. Whatever the true story, she struck a deal with #Nestlé that they could use her recipe on their packaging for exchange of a lifetime of free chocolate for Ruth to continue baking her tasty creations. @nestletollhouse began selling their Semi-Sweet chocolate bar pre-scored for easy chopping and then went on to create their Chocolate Morsels (or as we know and love them now as Chocolate Chips). The rest is sweet history. Ruth Wakefield, for creating one of the world’s most beloved comfort foods, you are my #wcw
